Streatham Labour Party and your Labour Parliamentary Candidate - Chuka Umunna

Streatham Labour Party is the Labour Party’s local organisation in Streatham. In March 2008 the party chose Chuka Umunna to succeed Keith Hill MP as Labour’s parliamentary candidate at the next General Election (which must be held in/by May 2010).  Chuka has been assisting Keith for several years at his local advice sugeries - you can find more information about Chuka here.

Through its members and local elected public representatives, Streatham Labour Party works hard for a fairer, more equal and democratic Streatham. Our members are drawn from all walks of life and backgrounds in the community, united by a common goal to better the life of people who live here. Your Labour Member of Parliament - Rt. Hon. Keith Hill MP

Keith has been the Member of Parliament for Streatham since April 1992, when he became the first Labour MP for Streatham. He has served in a variety of governmental posts since 1997 including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport and the Minister for London (1999), Deputy Chief Whip (2001), Minister for Housing (2003) and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (2005). As a backbencher since June 2007, Keith sits on the Public Accounts and European Scrutiny Committees of the House of Commons.

Your Labour Member of Parliament and Parliamentary candidate are there to help primarily with those matters for which Parliament or central government are responsible. Problems often arise with work carried out by central government departments and Keith and Chuka will be able to help you with with such issues, including those arising in relation to the National Health Service, benefits, pensions, tax and schools.

Your Labour Lambeth councillors make decisions affecting your local council ward and the wider council area.  Primarily they are concerned with those matters for which Lambeth Council is responsible, so they tend to deal with issues relating to the local eduction authority, council housing, planning, refuse collection, the local environment, and other council services. 

 

Your Labour London Assembly Member - Valerie Shawcross AM

The Greater London Authority (GLA) was set up in 2000 and is responsbile for transport, policing, planning, culture, environment, health, fire and emergency services and economic planning in London.  The GLA is headed by the Mayor of London whose work is scrutinised by the members of the London Assembly, both of whom are elected by Londoners.  Valerie Shawcross is the London Assembly Member for Lambeth & Southwark.
