What has Labour done for people in our parliamentary constituency? The Streatham constituency covers Streatham and parts of Clapham, Balham, Tulse Hill and Brixton – below you will find details of some of what we have delivered for people in the area since 1997.
Economy
Minimum annual leave entitlement has been increased from 20 to 24 days (for full time workers) – 800,000 people in London have benefited from this. A further increase to 28 days will take place later this year.- Over 70,000 workers in London benefitted from the 2007 increase in the level of the Minimum Wage.
- The number of registered businesses in Lambeth has increased by over 42% to 7,870 since 1997.
- Over 2,000 young people have benefitted from the New Deal.
Crime
Safer Neighbourhood Teams and Panels have been estastablished in every ward.- Lambeth recorded the biggest fall in crime in south London between 2006 and 2007.
- Between 2003 and 2008, burglary in Lambeth fell by 35% and violent crime fell by 16%.
- The number of police officers in London has increased by over 17% since 1998, now standing at 30,742.
- Over 4,000 Police Community Support Officers are employed in London, supporting the work of the local police force and providing a visible and reassuring presence on the streets.
- In the Streatham constituency, both burglary and violent crime fell between 2007 and 2008.
Health
- Gracefield Gardens Health Centre, which opened in Streatham in 2008, gives residents access to council and health services under one roof including a GP, nursing, foot health, midwifery and therapy.
- London has 544 more GPs than it did in 1997.
- London has 2,691 more NHS consultants than it did in 1997.
- Waiting numbers in London fell by 87,554 between 1997 and 2008, and fell by 2,568 in Lambeth PCT between 2002 and 2008 - before 1997, waiting lists of more than 18 months were common.
- The number of patients waiting over 13 weeks for outpatient treatment fell from 954 to zero in Lambeth PCT between 2002 and 2008.
- The number of patients waiting more than 13 weeks for diagnostic tests fell from 604 to 1 between 2006 and 2008 in Lambeth PCT.
Education
- A new secondary school, Lambeth Academy, has been built and opened with another on the way.
- The number of pupils aged 14 who are able to do maths (achieving Level 5 or above at Key Stage 3) has gone up by 32% in Streatham since 1997.
- The percentage of pupils aged 14 in Streatham who are able to read and write to Level 5 or above in English at Key Stage 3 has gone up by 30% since 1997, to 81%.
- We have 60 more primary school teachers and 110 more secondary teachers here than in 1997.
- Our secondary schools have seen a fall in average class sizes to an average of just over 21.
- The percentage of pupils achieving 5 A*-C grade GCSEs in Streatham’s schools has risen by 32.9% to 69%, which is 7% above the English average.
Families
3,600 families and over 6,000 children in Streatham have benefitted from Labour’s tax credits since 1997.- 10,500 families in Streatham will benefit from a £25 rise in the Child Tax Credit in April 2009.
- 23,900 children in 13,740 families in Streatham gained from the rise in Child Benefit in Janaury 2009, rising to £20 a week for the 1st child, and to £13.20 a week for other children).
- 9 SureStart Childrens Centres have been opened in the area.
Older people
- 4,270 pensioners in the Streatham constituency benefit from Pension Credit – increased to £130 over and above the rise we’d normally see (rising to £198.45 for couples) in November 2008.
- The annual Christmas Bonus for pensioners in Streatham of £10 was increased to £60 in December 2008.
- 12,230 local people in the Streatham constituency receive their Winter Fuel Payments at the moment.
